Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Technology Architecture, the Systems Engineer II is responsible for the health and maintenance of CCAD's technical and physical technology systems. The Systems Engineer II will be primarily responsible for administration, maintenance, and ongoing support for server, network, and storage infrastructure.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities


The Systems Engineer II is responsible for ensuring and maintaining the operational uptime and health of:


  • Mission critical systems and server infrastructure

  • Windows and Linux servers

  • VMware infrastructure on Dell VxRail platform, and associated cloud backups

  • Storage networks

  • SCCM image and software deployment for desktop, laptop, and server systems.

  • Applications servers and databases

  • Cloud environments and SSO - Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Azure

  • Network and communications technologies


In conjunction with the Infrastructure Team, the Systems Engineer II will:


  • Work closely with the Manager of Technology Architecture on initiatives to modernize and transform infrastructure while working towards a cloud-first strategy.

  • Collaborate with the other team members to plan and implement network and server infrastructure improvements including regular upgrades.

  • Handle day-to-day technical support of all supported systems.

  • Respond to server and network outages by triaging and solving technical issues until all inoperable systems and application services are restored.

  • Implement and monitor sound technical processes to maintain and enhance our overall technology health.

  • Champion, recommend, and implement best practices for security across Library & IT and the College community.

  • Ensure proper monitoring and alerting on system availability and performance is in place.

  • Communicate with vendors regarding software and hardware purchases and licenses.

  • Contribute to a library of technical documentation for IT.

  • Keep the Manager of Technology Architecture apprised of emerging mission critical IT issues.

  • Collaborate with other team members to deliver excellent service and support for college departments, students, faculty and staff.

  • Contribute to CCAD's commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.

  • Assume other duties as assigned by the Manager of Technology Architecture.


Secondary Duties and Responsibilities

  • As appropriate, participates as a support team member in key projects and strategic initiatives related to technology identification, selection, implementation, and evaluation.

  • As appropriate, supports other members of the Library & Information Technology team in providing coverage and direct support to the campus community.

  • Make recommendations for process and technical improvements.

  • In collaboration with other L&IT staff, communicates infrastructure improvements, changes, and system emergencies.

  • Assume other duties as assigned by the Managerof Technology Architecture.


Tertiary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Keeps abreast of new technology developments and makes recommendations for adoption.

  • Pursues ongoing professional development opportunities and certifications.

  • Represents CCAD and L&IT by attending or presenting at appropriate conferences and events.

  • Participates in the life of the College by attending (not supporting) campus events such as gallery openings, student exhibits and invited speakers.


Minimum Qualifications

  • An understanding of: SCCM, networking, firewall rules, DNS, Active Directory, Group Policy, command line scripting, file share permissions, PowerShell, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Azure AD, Microsoft SQL, TCP/IP, virus protection, VMware virtualization, backup software and strategies, Certificates/PKI, VPN, network printing, WiFi , etc...

  • Strong background in Windows Server and Linux

  • In-depth experience with SCCM and a deep understanding of creating and deploying Windows system images, software package deployments, and asset management


Education and/or Experience

  • A bachelor's degree and three years of progressive responsibility maintaining computers in a networked environment. Four or more years of equivalent experience may be substituted for degree requirement.

Physical Demands:

The employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is often required to sit and use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel and to manipulate keys on a keyboard. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, climb a ladder and lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Vision abilities required in this job include close vision.

Work Environment:

A hybrid work environment (remote work with scheduled days on campus) may be considered after at least three months of onsite campus work to become familiar with the environment. On campus the noise level is usually moderate.



COMPENSATION: This position is full-time, exempt. Compensation is commensurate on experience and qualifications. CCAD offers a benefits package including: vacation time, additional paid time off while the college is closed during winter break, sick time accrual, health and dental insurance, life and disability insurance, 403B retirement contribution, tuition remission, campus parking, and free admission to the Columbus Museum of Art.
