SUMMARY

The Ceramics Lab Technician position at CCAD is a part-time position that provides operational support within the Ceramics lab facility of the college. The technician coordinates their work under the supervision of the Lab & Studio Manager, works with the Ceramics Department faculty, and is responsible for the direction of several student workers who assist the technician with the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the ceramic lab facility and classroom.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to the following):

  • Order, organize and stock supplies for the studio
  • Maintain inventory on consumables and repair parts
  • Create and manage a kiln firing schedule
  • Oversee electric and gas kiln firings/repairs, and repair area equipment
  • Oversee scheduled cleaning and organization of the studio
  • Train students working in the lab facility on various studio tasks and routines
  • Collaborate and assist Faculty Chairs with projects as needed
  • Perform administrative duties as needed
  • Act as an on-call contact if needed for emergency lab situations
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • F.A. in Ceramics preferred, or equivalent experience
  • Electric and gas kiln firing experience
  • Experience in mixing glazes and clay bodies

QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will have a broad knowledge of the ceramic arts, and throwing on a potter's wheel. They should have familiarity with standard equipment such as slab rollers,extruders, etc. typically found in the ceramics classroom. The candidate must have basic computer skills such as word processing, as well as the ability to multitask readily. Interpersonal skills are also expected as the candidate will be reporting to their supervisor and directing student employees on a regular basis.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear.
  • The employee frequently is required to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud, depending on lab operations. Hearing protection may be advisable at times.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts.



COMPENSATION: This position is part-time, non-exempt. Compensation is commensurate on experience and qualifications. 403B retirement eligibility, campus parking, and free admission to the Columbus Museum of Art.
