SUMMARY

This position is designated as Essential Staff. Essential Staff presence at work is required regardless of the degree to which the college is operational, while open or closed, Essential Staff are required to report for work at any time their function is necessary to maintain or protect the physical well-being of the campus community. The General Labor for the Columbus College of Art & Design will work under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Facilities as part of a collaborative team to maintain all CCAD buildings and property and support college activities.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES includes but are not limited to the following:


  • Housekeeping and janitorial duties as assigned and under the direction of Housekeeping Lead Technician or Assistant Director, including but not limited to:
  • Removal of trash in classrooms, studios and labs, administrative areas, and hallways.
  • Sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming.
  • Cleaning and restocking restrooms.
  • Cleaning glass and other surfaces.
  • Dusting vertical/horizontal surfaces in administrative areas.
  • Interior painting and touch ups.
  • Basic grounds keeping and maintenance assistance.
  • Organize and maintain shop, studio, and storage areas. Assist with supply inventories and monitoring.
  • Serve as a reference and touch point for department student workers, including on weekends.
  • Provide occasional, basic back-up assistance for mailroom.
  • Assist with college events (event set-up and assistance during events), including in the evenings and on weekends as assigned.
  • Occasional light administrative assistance, including but not limited to (to make up less than 10% of overall responsibilities):
  • Inquiry phone calls, phone message returns.
  • Photo copying, scanning, document and mail preparation and handling.
  • Information collection and organization.
  • Filing, document organization, and meeting preparation assistance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.


  • Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, proper safety techniques and procedures while using common chemicals, power tools, hand tools and equipment, etc.
  • Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, proper lifting techniques.
  • Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, snow and ice removal techniques.
  • Ability to use required tools and equipment skillfully and safely.
  • Ability to learn and apply required procedures and use of equipment and supplies.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, overtime as needed for special projects and events. Assigned shift times are subject to change based on campus needs.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the college.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  • Ability to understand and use weight, volume, distance, and other measurements in the imperial/U.S. standard system.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions.
  • Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, talk or hear, and smell.
  • The employee frequently is required to handle, feel, and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance from others.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
