Full Time Fabrication Manager


The School of Design at Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD) , awarded A Top 10 Workplace from CEO magazine, is
seeking a full time Fabrication Manager for fall 2018 and is soliciting applications from those who have a minimum of
three years of machine, wood shop and digital fabrication facility management experience, and an interest in design
education. The successful candidate will demonstrate a thorough knowledge of professional and safety practices in
machining and shop operation as well as proficiency in Solid Works or equivalent CAD software, CNC milling and lathe
work, 3D printing and operating wood shop tools. In addition, those who demonstrate the ability to work in
multidisciplinary approaches and practices, and the ability to lead a team of diverse individuals through the successful
completion of complex projects will be given additional consideration. Candidates with shop safety or OSHA certification
will be given priority.


Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Manager will demonstrate excellent knowledge of shop maintenance and safety
procedures. Reporting to the Chair of the Industrial Design program, this position will support faculty from all School of
Design majors who teach courses that need to use the woodshop or digital fabrication lab and support students from all
majors who need to use the fabrication facilities. Support will include training others in standard shop safety protocol
and practices. As a full time employee, the selected applicant will:


  • Maintain and administer safety protocols for staff and students using the facilities.

  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for students and faculty.

  • Maintain facilities and equipment in the digital fabrication lab and woodshop.

  • Work with the Chair of Industrial Design on budgets, supplies and equipment for each area.

  • Supervise the cleaning and organization of the each lab's facilities and equipment.

  • Hire, train and supervise the performance of work-study students to monitor labs and maintain facilities.

  • Schedule and maintain records of hours worked by student employees.

  • Facilitate the purchasing of lab supplies.

  • Propose and execute projects for facilities upgrades.

  • Maintain a working knowledge of equipment used in the digital fabrication lab and woodshop.

  • Assist students in the fabrication of models and prototypes.

  • Other duties may be assigned.


Required Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have a willingness to integrate with an art and design education environment to help students
achieve their vision. Engaging and collaborating with other areas of the college to show and demonstrate the abilities of the
labs are essential components of this position. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills; show
initiative, dependability, empathy and reliability.


  • College degree in related field or equivalent professional shop management experience.

  • Demonstrate ability to work with a variety of materials such a wood, plastic, foam and metals.

  • Knowledge of Solidworks or equivalent CAD software.

  • Knowledge of HSM Works or equivalent CAM Software.

  • Experience with CNC machinery.

  • Experience with 3D printers.

  • Experience with Laser cutters.

  • Experience in the safe operation and maintenance of standard wood shop equipment table saw, planer, lathe and other powered wood tools.

  • Experience fastening, gluing, painting and finishing a variety of materials.

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software including Word and Excel.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate across all levels of a multidimensional organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to implement effective safety procedures across multiple shops and labs with a diverse
    audience.
