SUMMARY

The Director of Technology Architecture and Operations is CCAD's senior technologist and strategist responsible for the day-to-day operations, and evolution and vision of the college's technology architecture including: data centers, network (wired and wireless), and telecommunications. Working closely with the IT Infrastructure team and other members of Library & Information Technology, the Director will oversee CCAD's continued transition to a cloud-first strategy for IT operations by researching, experimenting, and deploying new technologies to enhance the experiences of our students, faculty and staff. The Director of Technology Architecture and Operations reports to the Chief Information Officer.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as the lead strategist and subject matter expert in cloud, data center, and wireless technologies in support of current and expected needs of the college
  • In partnership with the Chief Information Officer, continuously develops a short and long-term strategic vision for technology infrastructure and operations to support the evolving needs of the academic and administrative areas of the College.
  • In collaboration with team members, lead the assessment of current technologies and architectures and identify areas where improvements could be made
  • Continuously examine where new technologies are warranted and where existing services and methods might be eliminated, diminished or expanded as internal and external factors change
  • Directly supervise four staff members including oversight of their continued professional and skill development
  • Provide leadership and planning expertise -as well as capable decision making- at the operational level when necessary
  • Support development of policies and procedures which promote process and service improvement, and provide guidance to staff regarding policy and procedure decisions
  • Oversee disaster recovery and business continuity planning and execution
  • Direct the effective utilization and responsible allocation of the resources provided to Library & Information Technology (budgets, staff resources, and facilities) and work to maximize their use in service to the mission of the college.
  • Contribute to CCAD's commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Share oversight responsibility for operational uptime of mission critical systems and other software
  • As appropriate, both lead and participate as a support team member in key projects and strategic initiatives related to technology identification, selection, implementation, design, service design and evaluation
  • Participate in Senior Staff meetings and as appropriate serve on or lead campus committees
  • Negotiate and manage vendor and consultant relationships
  • In collaboration with other L&IT staff, communicate infrastructure improvements, changes, and system emergencies
  • Other duties or responsibilities as may be assigned

Tertiary Responsibilities

  • Represent CCAD and Library & Information Technology by attending or presenting at appropriate conferences and events
  • Participate in the life of the College by attending campus events such as gallery openings, student exhibits and invited speakers
  • Other duties or responsibilities as may be assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Directly supervises four staff members including a Lead Systems Engineer, a Systems Engineer and Information Security Analyst, a Systems Engineer focused on telephony and account management, and a Information Technology Systems Support Specialist.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects, expenditures, and prepare accurate cost estimates
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities and facilitate technology-related planning processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data and make local decisions based on national and local trends
  • Demonstrated ability to design processes that enhance services while maximizing resources.
  • Demonstrated effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to effectively explain complex technologies to a non-technical audience.

Education and/or Experience

  • A bachelor's degree required and at least three years of progressive responsibility including supervising staff and leading technology projects
  • Experience with or knowledge of technical concepts involved with system administration, networking, cloud transition, and local and cloud data center support
  • Proven experience designing, implementing, and supporting cloud computing including IaaS, PaaS, SaaS and cloud design
  • Linux and Windows Server environment experience

Physical Demands

  • The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

  • The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, and extreme heat.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

COMPENSATION: This position is full-time, exempt. Compensation is commensurate on experience and qualifications. CCAD offers a benefits package including: vacation time, additional paid time off while the college is closed during winter break, sick time accrual, health and dental insurance, life and disability insurance, 403B retirement contribution, tuition remission, free campus parking, and free admission to the Columbus Museum of Art.
