Summary

The Associate Vice President (AVP) for Operations will collaborate with Columbus College of Art & Design's senior academic and administrative leadership to create and maintain an environment that enables the college's students, faculty, and staff to fulfill the educational mission of CCAD. The AVP will provide leadership; operational expertise; and stewardship of CCAD's physical campus, teams, and related budgets. This position currently reports to the Vice President for Administration & Planning.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following and other duties as assigned:

Leadership/Supervision

  • Provide oversight and supervision to the following areas: Campus projects, Facilities & Studio Management, Auxiliary Services, and Safety & Security through communication, collaboration, planning, and data analysis.
  • Work closely with other departments and senior leadership to implement strategic initiatives.
  • Lead by example in treating others with respect, empowering staff, ensuring teams provide excellent customer service, being proactive and innovative, using data analysis to support decision-making, and being a strong and collaborative team player.
  • Support the professional development and training needs of staff.
  • Foster an inclusive and diverse organizational culture. Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in all phases and aspects of work.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with other campus offices and departments, faculty, and staff; understanding what makes this work unique in a college setting, prioritize academic needs with business needs.
  • Develop and maintain effective and close, interdependent, and complimentary working relationships with internal and external service providers.
  • Lead an organization with a strong focus on responsiveness, transparency, and communication.
  • Consult on an on-going basis with campus constituents to identify needs and services and explore opportunities for operational improvement.
  • Ensure effective consultation with appropriate campus constituencies in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and projects.

Planning/Project Management/Budgeting

  • Supervise and participate in the development of RFPs, bids, contracts, and proposals for construction and facilities-related services. Negotiate and administer contracts with outside vendors, architects, designers, and others.
  • Act as the liaison with local and state approval and permitting agencies as it relates to facilities. Serve as primary contact to the internal and external community on capital projects and construction.
  • Plan, direct, oversee, and participate in the development of all construction projects and facilities services operations.
  • Responsible for the management of financial and material resources in the areas of supervision. Oversee the development and control of related departmental budgets.
  • Under the guidance and supervision of the Vice President for Planning & Administration and in collaboration with other senior leaders, lead and direct strategic, operational, and developmental planning for campus facilities in support of the mission and strategic plan of CCAD.
  • Provide critical thinking to the leadership conversation in the capital investment in the physical plant, be it normal maintenance, repair/repurposing of facilities, new construction, or divestment of facilities.

Facilities and Physical Campus, Safety & Security, and Auxiliary Services

  • Supervise and support the Facilities & Studio Management teams in the maintenance of the physical plant and grounds, including all buildings, repairs, minor remodeling, energy conservation and management systems, academic spaces and equipment, and custodial services.
  • Lead the effort of putting solutions in place to address the campus' deferred maintenance backlog. Support the Director of Facilities & Studio Management in this work.
  • Provide leadership and act as an advocate for campus sustainability, employ working knowledge of current sustainability standards.
  • In partnership with the Directors of Facilities & Studio Management and Safety & Security; Lead organizational efforts to improve workplace, classroom, and studio safety.
  • Oversee the implementation of programs to create a safe working environment, promote environmentally sound practices, and foster regulatory compliance. Ensure safety training, hazard identification and risk assessment, accident investigation, hazardous material management, fire protection and life safety code compliance, and emergency response.
  • Oversee college safety systems contracts, testing and certifications/inspections including, but not limited to: fire alarms, fire suppression systems (hoses, extinguishers, etc.), elevator safety systems, as well as college emergency equipment, supplies, and resources.
  • Oversee and monitor the college's compliance response to all applicable federal, state, and local code and regulatory statutes pertaining to building and fire code requirements.
  • Supervise and support the Auxiliary Services team and in Residence Hall outside rental agreements and relationship development and management and in the management of campus food services and retail operations.
  • Oversee improvements to campus events and scheduling processes.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Areas reporting to this position include Auxiliary Services, Facilities & Studio Management, and Safety & Security.


Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 8 years of combined progressively responsible management experience in operations management and/or related areas. Experience must include supervision and personnel management. Higher Education experience is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships and build mutual trust and respect with professionals across the institution, and as a representative of the college to outside constituencies, and maintain them over time.
  • Exceptional judgment, a reputation for integrity and discretion, and demonstrated ability to think strategically and deliver tactically. Extensive ability to identify key issues in complex situations, evaluate options and initiate strategies for resolution.
  • Ability to translate long-term strategies into day-to-day operations, with demonstrated experience aligning resources with goals in an environment of competitive demands and resources.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor degree is required. Advanced degree is preferred. Education in engineering, architecture, urban planning, construction management, business administration/management, or a related field preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
  • Experience in a higher education environment or an art or design institution strongly preferred.

Physical Demands

  • The employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear.
  • The employee frequently is required to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand: walk: and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasional travel may be required.

Work Environment

  • The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
