Associate Vice President for Finance & Administration

 

Columbus College of Art & Design seeks a strategic and dynamic leader to be the college's associate vice president for finance & administration. Reporting to the vice president for administration & operations, the AVPFA serves as the chief business officer and is responsible for overseeing the financial and administrative areas of the college. Specifically, the AVPFA oversees the Business Office, Human Resources, Payroll and Benefits, and legal services. The AVPFA is responsible for promoting the highest standards of work, leading the institution effectively in matters of financial planning and the development and implementation of sound financial practices, managing resources, including the operational budget, capital expenditures, cash assets and long-term investments, and maintaining oversight responsibility for the financial welfare of all areas of the college. The AVPFA maintains a dotted line to the president for strategic fiscal planning and annual budgeting. The ideal candidate will be an experienced financial leader who understands higher education and the broad-based issues impacting independent, tuition-driven colleges and universities.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Fiscal and Business Office Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise the Controller and oversee the Business Office staff
  • Ensure and implement appropriate systems for financial and business affairs
  • Evaluate financial requests in relation to CCAD needs
  • Facilitate financial understanding among other members of the college community
  • Oversee development/implementation of appropriate business office policies and procedures
  • Lead training, documentation, and change management efforts
  • Evaluate and develop centralized purchasing for the college
  • Lead the annual budget planning and preparation
  • Manage the communication of approved budgets to units and monitoring of their budget management
  • Provide college leadership with financial analysis, as needed
  • Oversee the deployment of the college's financial data, as needed
  • Oversee the annual audit and preparation of tax documents
  • Manage the college's endowment and other long-term investments
  • Collaborate with the Vice President for Enrollment Management on setting tuition, discount rate, and enrollment projections
  • Propose financial planning and facilitate approved plans
  • Oversee the financial aspects of the development and implementation of strategic plans, campus master plans, and comprehensive and capital campaigns
  • Communicate budgetary and financial planning matters effectively to the Board of Trustees and other senior leaders
  • Act as liaison to the bank and other external financial entities
  • Serve as 403B Fiduciary and Chairperson

 

 

Administration Responsibilities

  • Supervise and support the Director of Human Resources to help achieve collegewide goals
  • With the Director of HR, oversee the development and implementation of appropriate systems, policies, and procedures for administrative areas of the college
  • With the Director of HR, oversee payroll and benefits
  • Work toward continuous improvement of our benefits packages to provide competitive and appropriate benefits that will allow us to hire and retain strong staff and faculty bodies
  • Manage unemployment as a reimbursing employer and Workers Compensation
  • Partner on the college's risk management efforts
  • With the assistance of outside counsel, manage legal services (e.g. regarding personnel, intellectual property, real estate, disputes, negotiations, and arbitration)
  • Oversee and sign contracts (e.g. regarding partnerships, real estate, and employment)

 

General Responsibilities

  • In partnership with the VP and CIO, lead and manage the college's enterprises, including appropriate technology solutions, in the areas of accounting, accounts payable, asset management, property control, external and internal audits, financial forecasting, investments, collections, employee benefits, payroll, purchasing and receiving, and student financial aid (in support of the Vice President for Enrollment Management)
  • Anticipate and plan for necessary technological innovations in business, finance, HR, benefits, and payroll
  • Ensure compliance with governmental, accreditation, and institutional regulations impacting the areas under your supervision
  • Stay current on and promote best practices in university finances and administration, with particular attention to the unique characteristics of an independent art and design college
  • Recognizing that all activities are interconnected, promote strong collaborative relationships between finance and administration departments with the rest of the college
  • Serve as a member of the senior staff of the college and the Strategic Leadership Team
  • Serve on assignments as are necessary to support the college's mission
  • Represent the college in appropriate venues as requested by the president or supervisor
  • Participate in administrative meetings and attend other meetings and seminars as requested
  • Other duties as may be assigned

 

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in accounting, business, finance or related field and five years related experience or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience required; extensive accounting experience required; terminal degree and ten years related experience preferred.
  • Experience overseeing legal matters and contracts preferred.
  • Extensive experience within a college or university setting preferred.
  • Understanding of university budgets and experience with budget management required; direct experience in a tuition-driven, private, not-for-profit higher education institution preferred.
  • Understanding of and appreciation for art and design practices preferred.
  • Proven track record of leading in a culturally competent manner, working with diverse groups, and fostering an understanding of and respect for diverse cultural perspectives.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities and ability to problem solve and facilitate meetings, as well as experience working collectively to achieve positive results and ability to perform multiple tasks in a calm, effective manner.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to listen to divergent views while building consensus and collegiality.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work at both the macro strategic level as well as the micro detail level.
  • Experience with a range of office, finance, and database software required; experience with ERP or student database software preferred.
  • A career demonstrating a progression of responsibility and portfolio required.
